Web development is the work involved in building and maintaining websites e.g product landing pages or web apps e.g Twitter.

Understanding this broad meaning will help us narrow down the goal of learning web development. Most businesses depend on the internet to operate. Considering the recent COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses are now forced to move to the internet to survive. This alone has made the web development career a high-demand skill.

Types of Web Development.

Many people get confused when starting web development due to a number of keywords being used whenever the topic is talked about. "Frontend development", "Backend development" and "Full Stack development" are the most used terms in explaining web development. They are the three categories of web development.

Below are the definition and specific tools each of these types requires:

1. Frontend Development:

Also known as "Client-side Development" is the type of web development that deals with making interactive components and building interface for the web. It focuses on the look and feel of the web. Examples of these components are clickable buttons, search bar, navigations, and all other visuals on the web. To become a Frontend developer, you have to learn the following technologies:

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • JavaScript

2. Backend Development:

As Frontend Development deals with the "Client-side", Backend development deals with the "Server-side" development. It keeps the internet working behind the scenes. Backend developers write the business logic of the application and focus on the logic and functionality powering the web. They are required to be familiar with the servers, database, and building APIs.

To become a Backend developer, you will be required to learn one programming language. Some popular languages used for Backend Development are:

  • Java
  • Python
  • PHP
  • JavaScript (Using Node.js)
  • C++
  • Ruby

Other skills required of a Backend Developer are:

  • Learning databases.
  • Learning a framework like Django, Ruby on Rails
  • Learning about managing hosting e.t.c.

3. Full Stack Development:

This is the combination of both the front-end and Backend Development. They are the generalist and can be trusted to build an application from start to end.

According to indeed review last year, Full Stack Development is the second-best job and the highest paid job in the Web Development space.
